Use a large piece of paper to create an annotated drawing of a Medieval castle. You may draw either type of castle.

This is an informational poster.

It should look good.
It should have a lot of information. Much more than the poster rules usually allow.

The drawing:

  • May be a Motte and Bailey castle or a 13th century castle.
  • May be an entire castle or just part of one.
  • May be just the castle or may include the castle town or the castle manor.

Annotate ten items.

These may be parts of the castle or people in the castle.
These must include details about each of the four main social groups;
  • monarch
  • lords
  • knights
  • peasants

A sample annotation for the arrow slits might read: Narrow arrow slits were build into the castle walls so that archers could fire out of the castle but attackers could not enter through them. The noblewomen of the castle might look out the arrow slits to see how the battle was going.

The project will be graded on overall poster quality and historical information.

David Macaulay, who wrote the book Castle which we read in class, made a PBS show based on the book. You can watch it below.
